If you have grown tired of shoveling the daily falls of snow that recent winters have given you, but you are unable to afford or store a powerful two stage machine, it might be prudent to invest in a single stage snow throwing machine like the Poulan Pro PR621 21-Inch 208cc LCT gas powered single stage snow thrower.

Poulan is well-known for its line of outdoor power equipment, and this entry into its Pro line is a great example of the company’s standards of quality and usability.

Features at a glance

  • 208cc LCT 4 cycle engine
  • 21 inch clearing width
  • 13 inch clearing depth
  • Discharge distance over 30 feet
  • Manual start

What can this Poulan Pro snow thrower do?

If you live in an area that receives light to moderate snowfall amounts with the occasional large blizzard, this unit should be more than adequate.

Smaller to medium sized walks and driveways are this machine’s specialty.

It is very light and easy to maneuver, making it a good alternative to dual stage snow throwers in areas where the power of a dual stage machine might not be needed.

With a clearing depth of 13 inches, it can easily get through foot-deep snow and the high speed auger helps propel the unit, making your job even easier.

The chute is made from a durable material that is designed to keep from clogging, but it must be manually adjusted for optimal performance.

How easy is it to use?

If you have never used a snow thrower before, you will be surprised at how simple this unit is to operate.

Though it does not include an electric start mechanism, the powerful LCT engine is easily fired up with just one or two pulls of the recoil starting cord.

Since it is a 4 cycle engine it easy to maintain and run with no fussy mixing of fuel and gas.

Like most single stage snow throwers, this unit does not utilize a separate drive system, but it is propelled by the auger which serves a dual purpose.

Adjusting the chute can be done with one hand while operating the machine, but it requires leaning over the control bar.

This snow thrower can be transported easily due to its light weight, and it takes up very little room in your garage or storage shed. Assembly takes about 10 minutes and it requires you to simply extend the handle into position and tighten it in place.

What about safety features?

Compared to larger snow throwers, this machine is fairly simple, and it does not contain nearly as many moving parts. That does not mean that it is free from potential danger, however.

To eliminate the possibility of users getting limbs caught in the auger assembly, Poulan has equipped this unit with a failsafe that immediately stops the engine as soon as the handle is released.

Is it worth buying this Poulan Pro model?

If you have a small to medium size area to clear, and you typically get no more than 8 to 10 inches of snow at a time, this unit should merit serious consideration.

Because it is a single stage machine, it should not be operated on rough, unpaved surfaces and, if you need to use it to clear heavy snow over a foot deep, you should expect to have to make a couple of passes.

Under the proper conditions, however, this unit works like a charm, and it is a terrific value at less than $400.00.

Buyers should be aware that some issues may be evident out of the box, though. Some users have reported that the gas cap does not fit properly and that the wheels are flimsy for a high quality machine.

Regardless, these complaints are pretty easily remedied, making the PR621 a good value hard working model which should be seriously considered examined when you decide to purchase a new single stage snow thrower.
